Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Early Education School?

The Early Education Schools, formerly known as the Child Development Centers, were established in 1943 and are now the largest provider of early child care and educational service providers for approximately 4,300 infants/toddlers, preschool, and school-age children in the city and county of San Francisco. Our parents are working, attending school or are in job training and meet federal and state income guidelines. Most schools are open five days a week from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. throughout the year.

How many classes are at TEP (Tule Elk Park)?

There are four prekindergarten classrooms for ages 3-4 years old, including a special needs education class. There are three transitional kindergarten classes for ages 4-5, which bridge the gap for those children who just miss the kindergarten cut off of September 1st.  (Kids born between Sept 2-Dec 2).  There is also an after-school program available from 2:30-5:30 every day. Both the preschool and TK programs can be applied for through the San Francisco Unified School Distict.  More information about admissions can be found here.

What's a typical day like for my child at Tule Elk?

Tule Elk offers a fantastically diverse curriculum!  With an emphasis on literacy, children get to dive into subjects like math, science, music and art.  And where else in San Francisco do you get 3/4 of a city block of beautiful outdoor space?  Our garden and playground provide lot's of space to run, play and explore during recess and free time.  Tule Elk kids also go on special field trips to places around the neighborhood, as well as learning centers like the Exploritorium and the Asian Art Museum.  Your child will always be challenged, encouraged and excited to go to school.

How does TEP Early Education School (EES) differ from the TEP Project?

The EES is part of the Early Education Department of the San Francisco Unified School District. The Tule Elk Park Project is the garden program of the school, sustained by private donations. Tule Elk Park Project uses the San Francisco School Alliance as its fiscal agent.

How can I volunteer my time at TEP?

Parents are important decision makers at TEP. We invite you to join the Center Policy Advisory Council (CPAC) that is comprised of parents/guardians, teachers, the site director, and other staff. You can volunteer in the classroom, lead fundraising efforts, and chaperone on field trips.

TEP has a mental health specialist and social worker on site once a week to consult with staff and families. Childcare is provided.
